One of the questions I hear most often toward the end of a doula consultation is, “So, when should I actually hire you?”
It's a great question! Whether you're newly pregnant or well into your third trimester, you might be wondering when the right time is to bring a doula onto your birth team.
The short answer? You can hire a doula at any point during pregnancy, but the earlier you book, the more time you have to benefit from their support.
That said, finding the right doula is much more important than rushing into a decision.
Can You Hire a Doula in Your First Trimester?
Absolutely! We love when families reach out early. I've even gotten inquiries from clients who had just taken a positive pregnancy test!
One of the biggest misconceptions about doulas is that our support primarily begins when labor starts. But because our package includes Lamaze-certified childbirth education, labor preparation, and lactation education, many of our clients love having access to these resources earlier in pregnancy.
At The Elgin Doula, our clients also have access to their doula throughout pregnancy by text, email, and phone. When questions come up between prenatal appointments, you're sorting through conflicting information, or you're unsure about a decision, you already have someone in your corner.
For example, what if you're realizing your OB/GYN or midwife might not be the best fit for your birth preferences?
We can help you think through your concerns, suggest questions to ask at your next appointment, and even recommend local providers who may better align with your goals.
Is the Second Trimester a Good Time to Hire a Doula?
Of course! Some of our clients prefer waiting until the second trimester, when they're beginning to feel a little more energetic and are ready to start preparing for birth.
This is often when families begin thinking more seriously about their birth preferences, childbirth education, and the kind of support they'll want during labor.
Hiring during your second trimester still gives us plenty of time to build a relationship, get to know your preferences, and prepare together through prenatal visits, education, and ongoing conversations.
And remember, you don't need to have your birth plan figured out before hiring a doula. Helping you explore your options is part of why we're here.
Is the Third Trimester Too Late to Hire a Doula?
Not necessarily!
We've actually welcomed clients to The Elgin Doula as late as one week before their due date.
While we won't have as much time for prenatal preparation, there's still tremendous value in having knowledgeable, continuous support during labor and birth.
In fact, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recognizes that doulas play an important role in improving birth experiences and outcomes, particularly through continuous support and collaboration with the medical team.
The biggest consideration when booking later in pregnancy is availability. Because our doulas support a limited number of families each month, due dates can fill up.
But if you're 30, 35, or even 39+ weeks pregnant, please don't assume you've missed your chance. It's always worth reaching out!
Should You Interview More Than One Doula?
Yes, and we actually encourage it!
Your doula will be with you during one of the most intimate and meaningful experiences of your life. You deserve to feel comfortable, respected, and genuinely connected to the person you choose.
That's why I often encourage prospective clients to schedule consultations with a few different doulas before making their decision.
Ask questions, learn about their approach, certifications, and pay attention to how you feel during the conversation. Can you picture this person supporting you and your partner through labor?
After a consult we're happy to hold your due date for one week following your consultation while you consider your options.
We can't hold due dates indefinitely as our calendar fills, but we also don't want families feeling pressured to make such an important decision on the spot.
So, When Is the Best Time to Hire a Doula?
My recommendation is to begin interviewing doulas during your first or second trimester, if possible.
Not just to secure your due date, but to give yourself time to build a relationship with someone who will be present for one of the most beautiful, and vulnerable experiences in your life.
The earlier that relationship begins, the more opportunities we have to answer your questions, help you navigate decisions, and prepare together.
By the time labor begins, our hope is that your doula isn't just another person walking into your birth space. She's someone who knows you, understands what's important to you, through walking alongside you in the months and weeks before birth.
And if you're still exploring what doula support looks like, our Birth Doula FAQs answer other common questions families ask before hiring.
