What No One Tells You About Breastfeeding (And Why We're With You Every Step of the Way)
Let’s be real, breastfeeding is one of those things people say is “natural,” but that doesn’t always mean it’s easy. You might picture those first moments with your baby as calm and instinctive, but more often than not, it takes support, patience, and a little (okay, sometimes a lot of) guidance to find your rhythm.
At The Elgin Doula, we believe in preparing you for all of it, the beautiful moments and the hard ones, because the more supported you feel, the more confident and connected you’ll be. That’s why we integrate lactation support into all of our Birth Doula Packages, and why we also offer it as a standalone service for families who need expert care after baby arrives.
Let’s talk about a few things no one really tells you about breastfeeding…and how our team is here to help.
It doesn’t always come naturally (and that’s okay!)
Some babies latch perfectly right away. Others…need a little coaching. The same goes for parents, you’re learning too! That doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It just means you deserve support from someone who knows what to look for and how to help.
That’s where we come in. Our Certified Lactation Counselors bring experience, gentle reassurance, and practical tools to help you feel informed and supported, whether you’re troubleshooting latching, navigating milk supply concerns, or just want to know you're doing it right. We're all about making sure you feel confident, not confused.
Your body is doing a lot
In the early days, your milk might not come in when you expected. You might feel full, tender, or unsure if your baby is getting enough. Spoiler: all of that is normal. But that doesn’t make it any less overwhelming.
That’s why our support isn’t just one and done. We offer consistent, responsive support to help you settle into a rhythm. As our client, you can text us, call us, or ask the same question more than once. We’re here to walk with you through all of it.
Breastfeeding is emotional, too
This isn’t just about feeding a baby, it’s about how you feel as a new parent. When breastfeeding is challenging (and it often is!), it can affect your mood, your bond, and your sense of self. You might feel pressure to "get it right," but the truth is: there is no one right way.
With The Elgin Doula, you're not just getting a lactation counselor, you’re getting a team that cares about you. We’ll support your goals and help you adapt as your journey evolves. That’s why we include lactation care in our Birth Doula Package and offer it as a stand alone service for our non-doula clients.
You don’t have to wait for something to go wrong to ask for help
We love when families reach out before problems arise. A little preparation goes a long way, and when we’re part of your care team from the start, we can help things go smoother from day one.
Whether you’re planning to breastfeed, pump, combo feed, or just want to understand your options, our personalized lactation support is built to meet you where you’re at.
You can get expert breastfeeding help, even if you’re not a doula client
Even if you’re not one of our birth or postpartum doula clients, you can still access the same expert, compassionate lactation care we’re known for. Our in-home lactation visits are perfect for families who want focused support around breastfeeding, whether you’re just getting started or navigating new challenges.
During these personalized visits, our Certified Lactation Counselors can help with:
Prenatal Lactation Preparation – Learn what to expect before baby arrives and set realistic, supportive feeding goals.
Nipple Pain and Latching Issues – We’ll assess and adjust positioning, latch technique, and troubleshoot any discomfort.
Milk Supply + Baby’s Weight Concerns – Get clarity on whether baby is getting enough and how to support healthy growth.
